Frankie Weiss and Her Magic

Chapter Eleven: 75 Years of Family Pets

Then, there is Joel , another of Marty’s sons.  Before Joel married he lived with his parents and had a pet ferret, named CJ. The ferret lived in a specially built cage in Joel ’s room and was not permitted outside of that room. Oliver , the Black Lab, also lived in the house at that time and, though he was well aware of the ferret, he seemed to calmly accept its presence so long as CJ minded the house rules. CJ after a few years succumbed to some wasting disease quite common to ferrets.

After Joel was married, he found an unlicensed white cat half-dead in the street. The cat had been declawed, but somehow managed to survive on the streets. His left ear was mangled, and he was full of fleas, worms, cuts, etc. Joel convinced his wife they had an obligation to take Casper to the Veterinarian for help. Today, Casper is a loving healthy cat and a happy family pet, a playmate to their son, Jacob .

I must relate one more story concerning Blackie. Marty home from a college break was asked to go pick up their precious Blackie at a Dog Grooming place. Arriving, Marty asked for Blackie, who had gone through a fur trimming, wash, brushing and nail clipping. The dog brought out, looked a little different to Marty. Thinking the grooming might have caused his new look. He had to tug on the leash and heard a low growl as they got into the car. Home, the dog would not run to Marty’s mother whom Blackie loved when called. Marty’s mother, by the dog’s reaction, instantly knew the shop had given Marty the wrong dog. It was a case of mistaken identity. It was not Blackie.  With a phone call, Blackie was returned and the other dog went back to its rightful owner.
