Frankie Weiss and Her Magic

Chapter Ten: Why Adopt a Cat?

On Learning How to Adopt

For the older person, before any adoption, we must take a number of things into consideration; your circumstances, your physical ability, your health, are you with spouse, living alone, children still with you? Are you ready to commit and be financially liable to the care of an animal?

The pet you choose will need visits to the Veterinarian on  a regular basis. The cost of food and care should be explored. The sickness of a beloved pet can be quite costly, I know of cases where keepers of these beloved animals have had to go into debt, to borrow money to get treatment for their pet, or perhaps the pet will have to undergo extremely risky and costly surgery in an attempt to save its life. Most of these pets could be regarded and are often deemed family members, “children”.  I’ve seen far too many tears shed when told nothing further can be done for a pet that has been loved as “child” during it’s time with that particular family, It’s heart-wrenching and sad.

In my own case with Frankie , the heroine of this “Magic” story, the inherited gingivitis could have killed her, and driven me to deep despair; it was not going to happen, money meant nothing to me as far as having this beautiful and loving Calico live her life to the fullest. I could never count having her beside me in the ratio of dollars and cents. She is one of the children with which my marriage was never blessed. It was costly to have her gingivitis arrested, Frankie has no teeth, but we share a love that has even grown stronger during the years of our togetherness. She’s healthy, playful, and beautiful and brings to me the contentment I wish for every older person living alone who is willing to adopt a pet to ease the pain of living without your spouse or children.
